Homemade waffles

Waffles are a beloved breakfast staple, known for their crispy exterior and fluffy interior. While the convenience of box mixes might tempt many to go for the quick option, making homemade waffles offers a range of benefits that not only elevate your breakfast experience but also promote healthier eating habits. Here’s why you should consider whipping up your own batch of homemade waffles instead of relying on pre-packaged mixes.

1. **Superior Flavor and Freshness**

One of the most significant advantages of making homemade waffles is the flavor. Using fresh ingredients allows you to control the taste and ensure that your waffles are as delicious as possible. Homemade batters offer a richness that box mixes often lack, resulting in waffles that are more flavorful and satisfying. You can also customize the flavor by adding vanilla, cinnamon, or even chocolate chips, giving you a unique taste experience with each batch.

2. **Control Over Ingredients**

When you make waffles from scratch, you have complete control over the ingredients you use. This means you can choose high-quality, organic, and non-GMO ingredients that align with your dietary preferences. You can also avoid artificial preservatives, additives, and excess sugar commonly found in many store-bought mixes. For individuals with food sensitivities or allergies, making your own waffles makes it easier to substitute ingredients and find the perfect recipe that works for you.

3. **Cost-Effectiveness**

While the convenience of box mixes is tempting, they can be more expensive in the long run compared to buying basic ingredients in bulk. Flour, baking powder, and sugar are pantry staples that can be bought at a lower cost and used for numerous recipes beyond just waffles. Additionally, when you make waffles from scratch, you can make larger batches to freeze for later, making it a cost-effective and practical solution.

Cuisine American
Servings 5 waffles

Equipment

  • waffle press

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unbleached AP flour
  • 2 tbsp Pure cane sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp Baking powder
  • 1 ¼ cups Buttermilk
  • 1 Egg
  • 4 tbsp Butter melted
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp Kosher salt

Instructions

  • Preheat your waffle iron (If you can choose settings, I recommend a darker or higher heat setting for a crispier waffle.)
  • In a mixing bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture and stir together just until combined.
  • Grease the hot waffle iron with butter or avocado oil. Add about 1/3 cup of batter for each waffle to the hot waffle iron. (The amount will depend on the size of your waffle maker so feel free to experiment with how much you add.)
  • I use a paper towl to grease my iron as I do not use cooking sprays
  • Cook until golden brown. Place on a wire rack until ready to serve so they stay crisp. Serve hot with maple syrup and butter or your favorite toppings.

This is a small batch that only makes 5 waffles, but it is easily dubbled or trippled.

You can set your oven to 225° and keep your rack on a pan in the oven if making a large batch.
