Why Make Your Own Dog Treats?
Most commercial dog treats contain additives, preservatives, and fillers that aren’t exactly ideal for long-term health. Some even sneak in sugar, artificial colors, or ingredients that can cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in sensitive dogs.
When you make your own, you control every ingredient—and that means peace of mind. These homemade treats are:
Free from artificial flavors, preservatives, and fillers
Rich in fiber and healthy fats
Customizable based on your dog’s preferences or allergies
Affordable and easy to make with pantry staples
Ingredient Breakdown: What Each One Does
Here’s what you’ll find in our base recipe—and how each one benefits your pup:
🥜
Peanut Butter / Pumpkin / Sweet Potato
Choose one of these as your flavor base:
Peanut Butter is a favorite for most dogs—high in protein and healthy fats. Be sure it’s unsweetened and free of xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs.
Pumpkin is a gentle option for dogs with sensitive stomachs. It’s rich in fiber and can help regulate digestion.
Sweet Potato is loaded with vitamin A, fiber, and antioxidants. Dogs love the natural sweetness, and it’s easy to digest.
🥥
Coconut Oil
Adds moisture and richness to the dough, and may also help support skin and coat health thanks to its healthy fats.
🥕
Carrots
Shredded carrots are naturally sweet, high in beta-carotene, and packed with fiber. They help give the treats structure while offering a vitamin boost.
🌱
Chia Seeds or Ground Flaxseed
Both are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. They also act as binding agents in the dough, helping everything hold together.
🥚
Egg
Eggs provide protein and help bind the ingredients. They also contribute to the chewy texture dogs love.
🌾
Oats & Whole Wheat Flour
Rolled oats are gentle on digestion and provide lasting energy. Whole wheat flour adds structure and fiber. You can substitute a different flour (like oat or chickpea) if your dog is sensitive to wheat.
🌿
Turmeric
This golden spice isn’t just for humans—turmeric has natural anti-inflammatory properties and may help with joint support in older dogs.
Optional Add-Ins for Extra Variety
Want to mix it up or tailor the treats to your dog’s needs? These optional ingredients are great additions:
Blueberries – Rich in antioxidants and natural sweetness (use fresh or frozen)
Applesauce – Unsweetened applesauce can add moisture and flavor
Parsley or Mint – Help freshen breath and aid digestion
