Homemade Dishwasher Detergent (Powder or Tablets)

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

If you’re making your own cleaning products and want control over what’s in them, dishwasher detergent is a practical place to start.

After testing, I learned something important: modern dishwashers rely on both alkalinity and mineral control during the wash cycle. A balanced combination of washing soda and citric acid makes the difference between dishes that look clean and dishes that actually rinse clean.

This version works in modern machines and can be used as a loose powder or pressed into tablets.

Why This Formula Works

  • Washing soda breaks down grease and food.

  • Baking soda buffers and supports cleaning.

  • Citric acid prevents mineral film and helps food release.

  • Kosher salt supports water softening.

Without mineral control, food can loosen and redeposit. That’s why citric acid is included in this version.

Homemade Dishwasher Detergent

This homemade dishwasher detergent uses washing soda, baking soda, citric acid, and kosher salt to clean modern dishwashers effectively. It can be used as a loose powder or pressed into tablets. The combination of alkalinity and mineral control helps prevent food from redepositing and reduces cloudy film on dishes.
