Strawberry Kool-Aid Homemade

DIY Strawberry Kool-Aid (No Citric Acid, No Artificial Ingredients)

There’s something nostalgic about a glass of cold, fruity “Kool-Aid.” The bright color, the sweet tang, the way it feels like summer in a cup. But take one peek at the ingredients list on most store-bought drink mixes and the nostalgia fades fast—artificial flavors, synthetic colors, citric acid made from black mold, and sweeteners you can’t even pronounce.

So I set out to make a cleaner, simpler version with just two ingredients: freeze-dried strawberries and date sugar. That’s it. No chemical shortcuts. No artificial anything. Just real fruit, real sweetness, and a little know-how to make it come together in your glass.

Why Freeze-Dried Strawberries?

Freeze-dried fruit has an intense flavor and long shelf life, making it perfect for this recipe. You can blend whole freeze-dried strawberries into a powder or skip a step and use ready-made strawberry powder. Either way, the flavor is pure and bright.

Tip: Whether you’re buying whole freeze-dried strawberries or strawberry powder, check the label—the only ingredient should be strawberries. No added sugar, no preservatives.

Making It Dissolve Smoothly

Without the additives and anti-caking agents in store-bought mixes, homemade drink powders won’t instantly “disappear” in your glass. And honestly, that’s a good thing—it means you’re not drinking chemicals. To get a smooth mix:

  • Stir the powder into a splash of hot water first, then add cold water.

  • Use a milk frother, immersion blender, or whisk to combine.

  • Or embrace the “fresh lemonade” style and give it a quick stir before each sip.

DIY Strawberry Kool-Aid

This DIY strawberry Kool-Aid is made with just freeze-dried strawberries and date sugar—no citric acid, artificial flavors, or colors. It’s naturally sweet, tangy, and refreshing, with a vibrant strawberry flavor. While it may not dissolve as instantly as store-bought mixes, it’s free from chemicals and can be blended smooth with a little hot water or an aerator for a clean, wholesome drink.
Prep Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup freeze-dried strawberries

Instructions

  • If using whole strawberries: Place freeze-dried strawberries in a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend into a fine powder.
Add date sugar — Add the date sugar to the blender or mix with the strawberry powder.
Final blend — Blend again until the mixture is a uniform, fine powder. This ensures the sugar dissolves more easily in water.
Store — Transfer to an airtight jar or container. Keep in a cool, dry place away from humidity.

To Serve

  • Mix 2 tablespoons of the dry mix into 1 cup water.
For best results, stir into a small amount of hot water first to help the sugar dissolve, then top off with cold water. An electric whisk, milk frother, or immersion blender can also help blend it smoothly.
Note: Without the additives and anti-caking agents found in store-bought mixes, homemade versions may not dissolve as instantly—but you get a cleaner drink without the chemicals.
For extra tang, add a splash of fresh lemon juice when serving.

Notes & Tips

  • Avoiding clumping: Date sugar naturally absorbs moisture, which can cause the mix to clump. To help prevent this, store in an airtight jar with a small food-safe silica gel packet or in the freezer (it stays powdery and extends shelf life).
Alternative sugars: Coconut sugar or organic cane sugar can be used instead of date sugar. Cane sugar will dissolve more easily, but coconut sugar adds a light caramel note.
Extra smooth mix: For an ultra-fine texture, sift the final blend through a fine mesh strainer before storing.
