Citrus Vinegar Cleaner

🍊 DIY Orange Peel Cleaner: Natural, Powerful, and Smells Amazing

If you’re like me and always looking for ways to cut chemicals from your daily routine, this all-natural cleaner made from orange peels, vinegar, and alcohol is a total game-changer. It’s tough on grime, naturally antibacterial, and smells like a burst of sunshine. Plus, it’s made with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

And let’s be honest—any time we can repurpose kitchen scraps and ditch synthetic cleaners? That’s a win.

Why Orange Peels?

Orange peels are rich in limonene, a natural solvent that cuts through grease and lifts sticky messes. Instead of tossing them in the compost, save your peels and give them a second life in this powerhouse cleaner.

The Ingredients (and Why They Work)

  • White vinegar: A natural disinfectant that breaks down mineral deposits, grime, and bacteria.

  • Orange peels: Infuse the vinegar with citrus oils that boost cleaning power and give it a fresh, clean scent.

  • Rubbing alcohol (isopropyl 70% or higher): Speeds up drying time and boosts germ-killing power—perfect for mirrors, glass, and high-touch surfaces.

🚫 What Not to Clean with It

Avoid using this cleaner on:

  • Natural stone surfaces (like granite or marble)

  • Finished wood or porous materials

The acidity in vinegar can etch or dull these surfaces over time. When in doubt, test in a small area first.

Sustainable + Effective = My Kind of Clean

This cleaner is proof that you don’t need a cabinet full of synthetic sprays to keep your home—or boat—sparkling. It’s low-waste, cost-effective, and best of all, it actually works. I keep a bottle in the galley, one on the patio, and another in the head—because messes happen everywhere, right?

Instructions

  • Instructions:
Fill a jar halfway with fresh orange peels. You can also mix in lemon or grapefruit peels if you have them.
Pour white vinegar over the peels until they’re completely submerged. Seal the jar and let it sit in a cool, dark spot for 2 weeks. Give it a gentle shake every few days.
Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth, discarding the peels.
    Mix your final cleaner:
    1 cup citrus-infused vinegar
    1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol
Optional: Add a few drops of essential oil (like rosemary, lemon, or tea tree) for an extra cleaning boost and scent.
Pour into a spray bottle and label it clearly. Store away from direct sunlight.
