Blueberry picking in New Bern N.C.

It's the start of the blueberry season here in North Carolina, and I was lucky enough to spend the morning at one of many north Carolinas pick your own farms.

North Carolina ranks 6th in the nation for blueberry production, with 7,200 acres of blueberry bushes; they yield about 46 million pounds of blueberries each year.

It also has plenty of pick your own farms, and I was lucky to find the Morris family Blueberry Farm. Only five miles from the New Bern Grand Marina and one mile from Bridgeton Harbor Marina, it's a great time spent picking a batch of fresh blueberries. And because they freeze beautifully, you can load up.

If they are closed when you arrive, don't worry they have an honor box, buckets, and a scale so you can still pick!

The morris Blueberry farm was established in 1932 and is still run by the same family. If you are lucky and Shannon is there, she is happy to share all things blueberry as well as the farm history.
The farm is 400 acres with 100 acres dedicated to blueberries and the rest split for a wildlife refuge and timber.
Shannon will tell you all about how to care and freeze your blueberries and even pass along yummy family recipes. And if you are not up to picking, don't worry; they have some picked for you as well as Jams, syrups, honey, drop biscuits, cookbooks, and blueberry drink infusion kits. That sounds like yummy docktails to me!
If you can't make it to the farm, you can find them at the New Bern Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.
